Acupuncture

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture uses the meridian system to guide energy to areas of imbalance, allowing change to take place. We identify areas of weakness or stuckness in the body and target them in order to restore balance to your system. Click here for more information about acupuncture and pain and the meridian system.

Does acupuncture hurt?

We find that everyone experiences acupuncture differently. Our patients have a variety of reactions to receiving acupuncture, ranging from being unable to feel anything to finding it intense. Most of the time, acupuncture that is practised skilfully is an extremely relaxing experience and rarely feels sharp or ‘needley’. It is common to feel tingling, warmth, a deep heavy feeling or little electric sensations. Please let your practitioner know if you are nervous about trying acupuncture. Click here for more information about what to expect.

How many sessions will I need?

Our clients often ask us how many appointments they will need, and because we are all so different the answer is usually “it depends”. Sometimes clients experience immediate relief after one session, while others will notice gradual change over time, coming weekly or fortnightly for acupuncture and taking Chinese herbs.

Some come in intermittently for help with colds, flus and infections. At your initial consultation we will take a detailed history, make a preliminary diagnosis and talk to you in more detail about a personalised treatment plan. For more information, talk to your practitioner.

How long will my session take?

Please leave 40 minutes to an hour for your acupuncture session.

What should I wear to my session?

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing to your session.

Chinese medicine

Are Chinese herbs safe?

Yes, Chinese herbs are safe when prescribed by a qualified practitioner. We only prescribe high quality herbs that have been tested for pesticides and heavy metals. Our raw herbs and herbal powders are prepared on site and contain no additives or fillers.

I’m a vegetarian/vegan. Can I take Chinese herbs?

Yes. Most Chinese herbs are plant-based. Please inform your practitioner and they will accommodate you.

Does Chinese herbal medicine contain endangered species?

No, our herbal medicine never contains endangered species. In fact, it is illegal to sell endangered species in Australia.

Can I take Chinese herbs while on other medications?

Yes, you can. Please inform your practitioner of any medications you’re currently taking and they will take this into account when prescribing your herbs. Our practitioners are trained to identify any interactions between pharmaceuticals and Chinese herbs.

How do I take my Chinese herbs?

Chinese herbs are typically taken twice a day. We prescribe herbs in pill form, powder form and raw form. Raw herbs are boiled into a herbal decoction at home. See Chinese herbal medicine for more information.

Can I buy Chinese herbs over the counter?

You will need to have a consultation with a Chinese medicine practitioner before we can dispense herbs for you. As herbal prescriptions are tailored to each unique individual, we need to assess your situation to give you the best results.
