Migraine
If you suffer from migraine, you know how debilitating and frustrating this condition can be. It is often impossible to find a medical root cause for migraines and many are left avoiding known triggers and hoping for the best, then resorting to pain-killers when the pain strikes. Many who suffer from migraines frequently feel they are barely struggling through.
What to expect
Acupuncture and herbal medicine can be very beneficial for managing and minimising your migraines. When working with migraine sufferers in the clinic, we commonly see three different Chinese medicine patterns.
Liver and gall-bladder imbalance
Migraines associated with liver and gall-bladder imbalance typically coexist with emotional issues such as excessive stress, frustration, rage and self-criticism. With acupuncture and cupping we aim to facilitate smooth flow of energy throughout the body, allowing emotions to express in a healthy way. We also often work on releasing tight necks, shoulders and backs to reduce tension in the head and face.
Spleen and stomach imbalance
Migraines caused by impaired digestive function are also common, especially in those who have food intolerences, sensitivities or IBS. We work on clearing Heat, Damp and Toxins from the stomach and large intestine, while supporting digestive fire. Dietary advice can be extremely helpful.
Blood stasis
Blood stasis migraines are especially common in women who experience menstrual pain or other problems with their cycle, with migraines often occurring at ovulation or premenstrually. Treatment focuses on regulating the menstrual cycle and flushing old, stuck blood from the womb. We strongly recommend Chinese herbal medicine as an adjunct to acupuncture when treating blood stasis.
Acupuncture may be an effective way of managing migraines according to these two studies.
